Solar Energy and Wind Power

Alternative Power Sources

DIY Solar Panels - Click HereI have put together this solar energy  and wind power information guide for people like me, people who understand there is a need for us all to address the climate change issue, but are not sure what we can do about it.

In our own small way we can all help, and one way is to educate ourselves in alternative energy sources and see whether we can make changes in the way that we use our energy, at the same time reducing our energy costs.

I have included links to sites with more information, products and advice for anyone who is interested.

This solar energy and wind power guide is meant for the lay person and is by no means comprehensive, however, it does give you some information about what is available, a brief history on solar and wind power, and how we have got to where we are today.

I felt there was a need for such a guide because we are all being affected by climate change and the resulting ever rising cost of traditional energy charges.

Solar Power

My parents have had solar hot water for thirty years, and wouldn’t have any other system.

When inundated by grown up family, they never run out of hot water and enjoy big savings on energy bills.

Their solar system is also covered for damage by their household insurance policy.

Living in a region that has sunshine, at least for part of the time, is the only criteria.

Thanks to the electric booster switch, the system is not totally dependant on sunshine, and will still heat the water during extended cloudy weather.

Currently governments are financing private households through subsidies, to get us connected with solar hot water systems, in order to reduce greenhouse gases.

I have included some pages on Government insulation incentives.

You need to check these options out thoroughly yourself.

Wind Power

Wind power or wind energy is the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity and is one of the fastest-growing forms of electricity generation in the world.

Humans have been using wind power for at least 5,500 years to propel sail boats and sailing ships.

The Babylonian emperor Hammurabi planned to use wind power for his ambitious irrigation project in the 17th century BC.

The ancient Sinhalese utilized the monsoon winds to power furnaces as early as 300 BC.

The furnaces were constructed in the path of the monsoon winds to exploit the wind power, to bring the temperatures inside up to 1100-1200 Celsius.

The first modern wind turbines were built in the early 1980s, although more efficient designs are still being developed.

Good selection of a wind turbine site is critical to economic development of wind power. Aside from the availability of wind itself, other economic factors include the availability of transmission lines, value of energy to be produced, cost of land acquisition, land use considerations, and environmental impact of construction and operations.

I hope you find the solar and wind power information in this guide helpful in your decision to Go Solar.
